What does the suffix -ic mean in chemisty?

i understand that this is the representative element (i. E. sulfuric acid) and that it can either loose or gain hydrogen causing it to change suffixes and at times prefixes, but my question is in terms of the amount of sulfur. does the suffix -ic mean 2, or is there even an exact number that can be associated with each suffix/ prefix?
